The next company that I'll be talking about is MAC Cosmetics which is probably one of the most professional cosmetic companies.
Unlike Rimmel London and Maybelline, the name of the company MAC cosmetics isn't named after a person that plays a big part in the history of the company. The letters M.A.C stand for Makeup Artists Cosmetics. The company was founded in 1984 by two men named Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In 1991, the first MAC stored was opened in New York. In 1996, a company called Estée Lauder Companies ended up with the controlling interest of MAC.
Before MAC cosmetics were sold to everyone worldwide, at first it was only meant to be sold to professional makeup artists. Now, the MAC headquarters is in New York.
The way MAC advertises is different to other companies as well. Companies like Rimmel London and Maybelline usually have pictures advertising a more natural look and if not, they wouldn't be too far from natural. But MAC advertises a more bizarre, glamorous and colourful look.
MAC's all time top 5 best products include :
1. MAC 109 Small Contour Brush
2. MAC 217 Blending Brush
3. MAC Microfine Refinisher
4. MAC 2 Lash
5. MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush
Although MAC is known for making professional makeup, MAC's top 5 products include mostly makeup brushes. Makeup like mascara, eyeliner, lipstick or eyeliner aren't included in the list which shows that even though MAC produces professional makeup, the standard of all products, including fake eyelashes and makeup brushes are very high.

Cosmetic Companies | Rimmel London |
Following on from the last post, the next world known cosmetic company that I'll be talking about is Rimmel London.
Rimmel/Rimmel London was named after the man who started it all which was Eugéne Rimmel. Unlike Maybelline New York, the history of Rimmel London is much shorter. In 1834, Eugéne Rimmel, as a teenager, worked by his father's side at his perfumery, which is a place where they make and sell perfume. Throughout the years, he came to be an expert in perfume and cosmetics and by the age of 24 he was good enough to be known as a cosmetics guru. As a result, he opened up his own store in Regent Street, London. In his store he made perfume, He had two sons that he passed the shop onto when he died. They built up the business and made new products like mascara and more. But as time went on, and World War Two came and passed, the ownership of the company changed a good few times. In 1996, the fragrance company Coty. Inc took ownership of Rimmel and til this day is still the owner.
The headquarters of Rimmel London is set in London, England. The official slogan for Rimmel is 'Get the London Look' and it is unknown when this was created. Rimmel is UK's best selling cosmetic company at the moment. Rimmel products are made in a factory in the UK. Kate Moss was selected by Coty. Inc in 2001 as the spokeswoman of the company. Different faces of Rimmel London are Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Lily Cole, Ayumi Hamasaki, Georgia May Jagger and Coco Rocha.
Rimmel's 5 best reviewed products include :
In the video above, youtuber Fleur De Force gives her opinion on what she thinks Rimmel's best and worst products are.
During the time of Kate Moss being the Rimmel London spokeswoman, there was controversy after negative pictures of her surfaced online. Although Kate Moss lost a lot of contracts during that time, Rimmel kept her as the spokeswoman. After a while, Georgia May Jagger began to work alongside Kate Moss in being the spokeswoman and they were both the face of advertisement for Rimmel together. But there was more controversy with their advertisement posters. Some were banned because of the use of fake eyelashes in the ads.
Rimmel's 5 best reviewed products include :
- Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation
- Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer
- Rimmel Kate Moss Lipsticks
- Rimmel ScandalEYES Waterproof Kohl Eyeliners
- Rimmel Stay Matte Long Lasting Pressed Translucent Powder

Cosmetic Companies | Maybelline |
For my next few posts I'll be talking about different, world-wide and famous cosmetic companies like Maybelline, Rimmel London, Urban Decay, MAC etc. For this post, I chose Maybelline first.
Although now Maybelline has been bought by L'Oréal since 1996, the company started off with a 19 year old Tom Lyle Williams and his sister Maybel. It is said that Maybel used a mixture of Vaseline and coal dust to put on her eye lashes to make them darker and look fuller. Tom saw this and used a chemistry set to continue on this idea and made a product that he called 'lash-in-brow-line' to sell the local people. Because this idea came from his sister, he renamed the product Maybelline, hence the name of the company now.
The headquarters of Maybelline is set in Chicago, United States. The official slogan was created in 1991 for advertising which is 'Maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's Maybelline.' In 2001, Maybelline became Maybelline New York. Maybelline products are made in a huge factory in North Little Rock in Arkansas.
Some famous models that work in the advertising part of Maybelline are Sarah Michelle Gellar, Erin Wasson, Josie Maran, Kristen Davis and a lot of others.

Maybelline's all time top 5 best products include :
1. Maybelline New York Colour Sensational Lip Color
2. Maybelline New York Ultra-Brow Brush-On Color
3. Maybelline New York Shine Free Oil Control Loose Powder
4. Maybelline New York Lash Discovery Mini-Brush Washable Mascara
5. Maybelline New York Mineral Power Naturally Luminous Blush
Although these are the top 5 best Maybelline products, all five are sold for a reasonable price. Each product in the list above is sold for less than 10 euro.
It is said that some ingredients used in Maybelline eye shadows could be toxic, but ingredients include triisostearin, phenyl, magnesium stearate, nylon-12, alumina, calcium sodium, synthetic wax. etc. But the ingredients that buyers are worried about are butylparaben, parabens and talc because of the relation to tumors and cancer.

Beginning of Makeup and Cosmetics
The first use of makeup and cosmetics dates back to around 6000 years ago, during the times of Ancient Rome, Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. In Egyptian times, they used caster oil as lip balm and made skin cream from rosewater, olive oil and beezwax. In Roman times they would have used lead to make their faces whiter and kohl as eyeliner to line eyes. Blood from animals would be used to paint nails like nail varnish and perfume would have been made from a number of different ingredients e.g lavender, lily, peppermint, rosemary, rose etc. The perfume was used for religious rituals aswell though.
In Europe, during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance the church leaders were against wearing makeup. They thought it was a sin. Up until the 20th Century, lookng pale was a good thing. Since the lower class people would have been working outdoors more often with crops and agriculture, they would be exposed to more sunlight, turning their skin tanner. Whereas the more upper class people would have more leisure time to be indoors all day, keeping their skin nice and pale. To make yourself look pale, sometimes they would use white powder and even cut themselves to lose blood and become pale.
In America, the closest things to makeup was the face paint the Native Americans used during tribal dances, religious exercises and battles.
